Christian Aid Week May 12th-18th 2002

Christian Aid works to provide hope, health and the chance of a decent life to the world's poorest communities, whatever their religion. Gift envelopes are available in the local churches during early May. If you a tax payer, your gift may be Gift Aided to increase it by 28% recovered from the taxman. You may, alternatively, call 08080 006 006 (24 hours) to donate using your credit card, or give online at www.christianaidweek.org

An example of what your money may help to provide is that £3 will buy two fruit trees for a family in Ghana, helping them to secure an income.
£10 provides a day of training to teach a farmer in Honduras how to process organic sugar, a crop that would significantly increase the family's income.
£35 will train a traditional birth attendant in Ethiopia, helping her to reduce maternal mortality in her village by up to 70%.

Christian Aid is also campaigning, with others, to change the rules of international trade and to make tackling poverty their main aim. Supporting Christian Aid is a way of developing connections between our faith and all that it happening in the developing world. Working through local organisations, "partners" in these countries, Christian Aid enables poor people, who often have little power or voice in their area, to help themselves. Please do your part to work towards a fairer world.

"Thy kingdom come, on earth as it is in heaven."

A Letter from the Lay Reader

I am writing this letter as the children have just got on the bus to start a new term at school.
We have had a beautiful week of weather to follow Easter and that has allowed thousands of people to wait in relative comfort to file past the coffin of the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother at the lying- in-state.

The death of the "Queen Mum" on Holy Saturday reinforced for many of us the loneliness and loss felt by the Disciples after the crucifixion of Jesus on the day we now call Good Friday. Their loss was to turn to joy on the Sunday in the Resurrection which they could scarcely comprehend and which some found hard to believe.

For the next few weeks the Disciples were to be granted special times with the Risen Christ-I especially love the story which ends with the picnic breakfast on the beach (John 21)-and yet they were still afraid and hid away after Jesus had ascended to Heaven. And it was to those gathered in secret in a house in Jerusalem that the strengthening, enlivening and emboldening Spirit came at Pentecost.

They were changed - and immediately prepared to speak out to the crowds of faithful Jews filling the streets for the festival. No longer afraid of the consequences but filled with new life and courage.

This Holy Spirit, God's strength, support and power is there for us to claim for ourselves when we feel sad, lonely, threatened; a love to enfold each one of us and give us strength for whatever the future holds.

God's power is also there for us when things seem to be going right, we are happy, life seems good to us; for the Holy Spirit is there for all times and occasions, making of each moment something more -a chance to witness to our faith in God and our belief that he is with us through all our days and awaits us when our journey in this world is finished, whenever that may be.
May you feel God's great love with you in the good times and upholding you when things are not going well. May we all feel strengthened anew by the Holy Spirit as we go about our daily lives.

Mary Carter, Reader.

FLOWTON NEWS

Flowton PCC wish to gratefully acknowledge the receipt of a cheque for £6000 from the Historic Churches Preservation Trust towards the repairs done recently, in particular to the windows and the East window stonework.

The Historic Churches Trust was set up a s charity in 1953 to assist in the repair of churches and chapels of all denominations in England and Wales by awarding grants and interest-free loans to parishes which apply to it for help. It receives nearly 1000 applications a year and awards around £1,000,000 to about 300 churches each year.

It is itself dependent on donations and would love to make bigger grants. If you are interested in the work of the Trust and would like to help in its unending task, contact the Secretary at HCPT, FREEPOST, Fulham Palace, London SW6 6BR and become a "Friend" of the Trust, and thus play your part in helping to save our wonderful heritage of parish churches.

Flowton PCC would also like to acknowledge with gratitude the receipt of £3500 from the Suffolk Historic Churches Trust towards the recent repairs.

Suffolk Historic Churches Trust is another charity helping churches and chapels-this time just in Suffolk, and it is also dependent on voluntary contributions. You may remember that each September some of our youngsters (and their parents) get on their bikes and cycle around the county on a sponsored cycle ride and this is just one way in which funds are raised for the SHCT. Details of the fund are available at the back of Flowton church.

Our repaired windows will be rededicated by the Rev. Linden Fletcher at the Songs of Praise service on June 30th at 6.30pm

An Evening with Derek Jefferson
For most people Christianity is irrelevant, we have some Holidays out of the Christian tradition; Christmas, Easter, and a Bank Holiday in May that used to be Whitsun. They celebrate the key events and elements of Christianity, the birth of Jesus, the death and resurrection of Jesus, and the arrival of the Holy Spirit upon the new born Church. Church services, birth, marriage, and death mark some family occasions. But these holidays and occasions are the only Christianity many experience.

Then a celebrity gets religious, and for a brief moment we may concede that there might be something in all this Jesus stuff after all.

Derek Jefferson is just one such celebrity. In the late 60' and early 70's Derek played in Ipswich Towns defence, and in the local clubs and pubs! His lifestyle and aggressive defending was the stuff of the tabloids, but Derek was changed dramatically. Hear his story at The Barking Fox at 7.30pm on Monday 13th May followed by a buffet meal. To book a place call Mark Newcombe 01473 831940.
There will be no charge for the evening, but contributions towards costs won't be refused!

Club Activities
Our Community Action Plan questionnaires showed that people were interested in more club activities in Somersham. Since the questionnaires were completed the Gardening Club has been formed and is proving to be very popular. A Youth Club was also popular and we can report some good news on that - see the separate flyer with this issue.

Other ideas from the questionnaires were a DRAMA GROUP, ART GROUP, CHILDRENS BADMINTON AND TENNIS, and CHILDRENS BOOK CLUB. Volunteers are needed to make these, and any other activity happen. Often it just takes one person to take the initiative and others soon step forward to support.

The parish council would be pleased to consider requests for financial help to get the activity started, perhaps for leader training or equipment costs. If we are unable to help in full we can give advice on how to seek funding through grants.

If anyone is interested please contact me, details at the end of the article.

Directory of Clubs and Societies

Another idea coming from our Community Action Plan is to create a directory of all the clubs and societies in Somersham. There are probably more than we think. The purpose would be to provide each household with a copy for reference, display on notice boards and also to give to people moving into our village.

If you run a club or society or are a local contact for a national organisation and would like an entry in the directory, please provide the following details to the parish clerk :
· Name of club or society
· Main purpose of the club
· When and where you meet (if relevant)
· Contact person and contact details (address, telephone, email)

We would also like to create an on-line version of this list, if you do not wish to appear on this list please let us know when you send in your details.

Village Hall Community Action Plan Response
The Village Hall committee have sent a letter to the Parish Council in reply to the suggestions and criticisms brought up in the Community Action Plan by the people of the village:

"In the 17 months since the villagers completed the CAP questionnaire the Village Hall management committee have made great progress and all the serious suggestions and criticisms made by the people have been addressed and action taken.
We are now achieving a high rate of usage for the main hall and the committee room. To publicise events each organisation usually puts a notice outside the hall, as well as notices on the notice boards and in the Link. We also propose to produce an advertising flyer.
The main suggestions for improvement in the CAP have been carried out, such as better acoustics in the main hall and improved sound insulation in the doctors surgery, heating system improved, grass and landscaping tidied up, better external lighting, additional storage provided etc. Now that we have the additional storage we we shall shortly be ordering a stage system.
The Village Hall can offer superb facilities, subject to current booking, to any individual or group who wishes to form a new club or society."

Thank you to Hilary Bridger the Chairman of the Village Hall Management Committee for sending us this letter.

Watering Close pond project
The Watering Close pond project has successfully obtained a £1200 grant from COVER, Community and Voluntary Forum: Eastern Region.

Somersham Church Notes

Many thanks to all who helped organise and supported the Spring Fair in April. Details of profit will be in next month's Link.

We are hoping to hold a Summer Garden Party / Fete on Saturday 13th July, but have as yet to finalise the venue. More details in next month's Link.

Looking further ahead, what about joining us for a Harvest Supper on Friday 20th September? We hope that friends from the other seven parishes of the benefice as well as Somersham will be able to come, so put the date in your diaries now. More details to follow.

SOMERSHAM FOOTBALL CLUB

At last, some success for the first team. On 9th March they got their first point of the season with a 0-0 draw away to St. Clement and followed this with a 2-2 draw away to Murray Rangers. Then on 23rd March they got their first win of the season with a 4-1 success at Elmswell. This in no way took them off the bottom of the league, but at least it makes the season's record a little better reading. Saturday 6th April brought the team down to earth with a 1-3 home defeat to Wickham Market.

The reserves are still fighting for their Division 5 survival and a 2-3 home defeat to fellow strugglers Saxmundham on 9th March, a 2-1 defeat at Woodbridge the following Saturday and 2-3 reversal at home to Bacton Reserves didn't help their cause one little bit. Then on 30th March they achieved a remarkable result when they beat a nine man Kirton White Horse 21-0 at home. OK it was only against 9 men, but you've still got to go out there and do the business. I've been involved with the club since the mid-50s and can confirm that this is the highest score in the club's history and a certain young gentleman, who shall remain anonymous, scored a personal club record of 9 goals. I reckon both of these club records will stand for a very long time to come.

On Saturday 30th March we held our second race night in the Village Hall and, like our previous one, it was a great success. An exciting evening's racing was enjoyed by 90 'punters' and we raised £600 for club funds. We would like to thank everyone who made it such a good night: our sponsors; horse owners - especially those who 'bought' in the auction; those who organised the event; and of course, everyone who came and made it such a good evening. Thank you all very much.

Dennis Mumby

We are asking you to donate children's clothing, shoes, toys and play equipment. Any bulky or large items can be collected. Military transport has been organised so we would appreciate items within the next two weeks please.

If you have anything you can give please could you bring it to the Garage in Somersham, or to Rohais at Forge View (next door) and we will pass it on to the main collecting point. Thank you.

Somersham Primary School

The children in Class Four are all now full time children and this term we plan to investigate growing, both themselves, plants and animals along with starting to get ready for Key Stage One, which will happen in September.

The Foundation children (Class Four) are not involved in the National Curriculum but do have their own guidelines to follow. This is carefully laid out so that by the time we reach the end of the summer term they should be ready to move on to the next stage in their education, which includes the Literacy and Numeracy hours, the same as the rest of the school. (As clear as mud now, yes!)

Years One and Two have been sewing in their Design and Technology lesson. First they had to design their own hand puppet, cut out the paper pattern, then the material, then get sewing. They achieved some wonderful results, especially when you think that they are only 5, 6 and 7 ears old. These children have been working very hard with their literacy and numeracy and are really doing well.

Years Three and Four have had a trip to Ipswich Museum to coincide with their history lessons and have also been working hard on extending their literacy and numeracy skills.

Year Five have been having fun weighing Mrs Kenny's potatoes!(O.K. so lots of other things also, but this is one thing that sticks in our minds.)

Year Six have been studying had for their S.A.T.s which come up next month, their relaxation has been making a model village and fun fair with lighting and moving parts (that's science and D.T.!)

Hello, - Unfortunately the bogus callers are still operating in our area. On March 19th the offenders targeted two pensioner homes, one in Great Blakenham and the other in Stowmarket, in the space of an hour. They were prevented entry at Great Blakenham as the pensioner did not believe them. The suspect is described as white, tall, slim build around 18 years old, dark hair and smartly dressed.

A short time later 3 men claiming to be from the Water Board called at an address in Stowmarket. While one of the men kept the occupants distracted his accomplices made a search of the upstairs room.

The three men who all spoke with an Irish accent are described as white, one aged 18 years old around 5ft 3ins tall, the other two aged between 20 and 40 years-one was wearing a grey jumper.

Please be on your guard and do not let any unknown callers into your home without checking first that they are genuine. If in doubt, keep them out and dial 999.

During the month of March, in the village of Somersham, an elderly resident's back gate was smashed and also damage caused to a parked car. These two incidents of damage were possibly caused by children. Please ensure that you know where your children are at all times and if anyone knows who is responsible for this damage, please contact me.

Thank you to all the children and teachers at Somersham Primary School for inviting me to attend in March. School dinners have definitely improved since I was at school. I'm sorry for all the noise we made with the police car sirens.

During June and July I will be taking the older children at both Ringshall and Somersham School for the cycling course again. This will be the third year we have run this and it has proved valuable. Please encourage your children to join the class if they are old enough.

I mentioned in last months newsletter that our churches are being broken into. I'm pleased to let you know that the offender has now been arrested in relation to these crimes - so thank you to all of you for keeping an eye on your local church.

You have probably read in the local paper that a company from Nigeria is sending faxes and emails to companies in Suffolk, claiming that if you send them a small amount of money they will send you a large cheque in return. Please do not send any money to these companies and forward any letters or e-mails to me. Unfortunately a few people have been sending this company money and of course have not received anything in return

Please give me a ring if I can assist with any school holiday summer clubs or if you want Police attendance at any village summer fetes.

Thank you to you all for your help.

Keep safe.
